Why should you join us?
We have continued our hybrid meeting formats this year as we try to include any members who are unable to join us for our in-person meetings. Each month a meeting reminder is sent to members and interested parties detailing the meeting format and location.
The purpose of the Club is to promote friendship among women of Rice University and to welcome newcomers.
The Club welcomes as members women faculty, staff, active or retired, as well as female spouses, partners or family members of faculty and staff, active or retired. We also welcome alumnae or wives of alumni, female postdoctoral students and female spouses, partners or family members of postdoctoral students.
Here are some of the things we do on a regular basis. We vary them with occasional field trips, museum visits, movie nights and other events. Details can be found in our schedule of activities page.
Looking for INTELLECTUAL activities and to increase your skills and knowledge?
Our Book Discussion Group meets the first Wednesday of each month at noon, for lunch and book discussion in a members’ home with a ZOOM hybrid connection beginning at 12:30. Hostesses provide beverages. Bring a sandwich, if you like. Look for our book schedule this year. These popular discussions often attract 20-25 members.
Come to our Monthly Meetings on the second Wednesdays of the month during the Academic year! Listen to a different speaker from the Rice Campus, the Houston Community and beyond. We hope to have a hybrid option for all of our regular meetings. Watch the mailing list for details.
Are you interested in SERVICE to the Rice community?
Get involved with the Graduate Student Loan Closet!
The Club usually runs a loaner store with thousands of household items! The store is housed at the Graduate apartments on Bissonnet Street, and is staffed by our Club members, who volunteer their time and effort.
For a minimal yearly fee we loan any number of items to Rice graduate students, who keep them while at Rice, and return them with their gratitude when they graduate. We get many wonderful notes from them every year, telling us how much we helped them!
Extra volunteer work is needed especially at the beginning and end of the semesters, so please show up and help us! For info see http://gradloancloset.blogs.rice.edu/
… or get involved with the Children’s activities!
Every year we throw a big daylight Halloween Party for the children of the Rice community and the neighborhood, in the safe environment of the campus.
Also, our Easter Egg Hunt has been legendary with many generations of Rice children.
Would you like to SOCIALIZE and have FUN together with other Rice women?
Our “Adventure Lunch” meets at Houston are restaurants on the third Wednesdays of the month. Join us and bring suggestions for new places to try! Look for announcements in email and at our regular meetings.
Walk the Park with us! Explore the sights and trails at Hermann Park, weekly at 9 AM Friday through the end of May. We will recommence in September. Pace – walk and talk. Meet in the free parking lot next to the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion.
Several new small groups discussions launched via Zoom and email correspondence in the fall of 2021: Gardening, Cooking, Arts, and Travel. Watch the email list for details on joining these special interest groups.
